Scar Treatment after Surgery

For those who don’t have them, scars can seem like a minor detail in the mix of all complications that come as a result of a serious surgery. And that would make sense, if we weren’t human. However, we are. No one likes to live with the physical aftermath of a traumatic life event, especially when the physical results cause insecurities and self-consciousness. In addition to these negative effects, scars can actually be quite painful for years after the injury which caused the scar is healed.

If you’ve undergone a surgery which left you with a scar (or multiple scars, for that matter) you’d like to get rid of, you should know that you have several options. The first of these options is to use creams and/or oils to accelerate the healing time of these scars. These creams and oils are fairly inexpensive and usually simple to use.

Just because they’re simple, doesn’t mean that oils and creams are necessarily convenient, either. People who use creams often complain that they are a hassle due to the fact that to get the most benefit out of them, they must be reapplied very often, and cannot really fade or shrink a scar. Even if the scar is in a place which is not normally covered by clothing, most people don’t want to wear creams on their skin in an office environment (can you blame them?). And because creams are not quite conducive to staying put during your sleeping hours, this only leaves a few hours of wear-time in the evening.

Another option is dermabrasion. This procedure usually yields fairly positive results, as it literally scrapes away dead skin cells to make way for the healing and replication of current healthy cells. However, dermabrasion can be painful, and that is usually the last thing anyone wants after undergoing a painful surgery and recovery process. Patients usually have to get the procedure done multiple times before seeing noticeable results, which can end up being very pricey.

If neither of these options sounds quite viable for you, there is another treatment which has not only proven to be very effective, but is also pretty convenient as well as relatively inexpensive. This treatment is called silicone pads. Silicone pads, like InvisiScar® work very similarly to the creams and oils many people have been using for decades. They have the same skin softening properties, and are placed directly onto the skin.

Silicone patches and strips are the idea at-home treatment for scars, because they are inexpensive, and don't require a visit with a dermatologist, or a prescription. In addition, these silicone patches keep the skin at a consistent temperature which promotes skin cell movement and speeds up healing times. For those who don’t want to give up their favorite scar healing cream, many people have found it very helpful to use these creams during the day, and wear a patch at bedtime, as they stay conveniently in place all night without the mess a cream might cause. Whatever combination you come up with, silicone patches are a great addition to any scar-healing regimen you might have in place.
